The Story - background information

"Makai.

In Lumen Lunae the 'real' world is the Makai - a land inhabited by elven creatures classified by a hierarchical system, a land where eternal night persists. The human world as we know it is but a creation - a toy made out of a moment of boredom and whim - by Suruga, the ultimate dictator and ruler of the Mazoku that live in the Makai. Human flesh and blood also happen to be a food source for the Mazoku, yet the humans inhabiting the human world are oblivious of the Makai's existance and do not realize their fate until it's too late to turn back.

The Makai system can be simply described as 'ruthless' - the higher classes trample the lower ones, with the ruling Seihakuke being the most selfish and cruel of them all. Anyone who dares to cross a member of the Seihakuke are promptly turned into monsters or killed off without even a second thought. The corruption and viciousness of the ruling class causes the people to either live in seclusion and secrecy or to gamble for their survival by obeying and following orders given from the Seihakuke.

Houjou Kai, the story's main character, is one of Suruga's children. He is, however, far different from his fellow Seihakuke 'family' members - Kai is the bastard son of Suruga and a human girl named Houjou Aika, the result of a rape which throws Aika into a downward spiral more more deadly than she could ever imagine.

Kai is taken away by his father and locked up in a tower named the Fortress of Time, where the flow of time is warped and manipulated, for hundreds of years. Kai requires a constant source of medicine, provided by the drug-maker Hisanagi, to help his unstable half-Mazoku half-human body. He is also abused and taken repeatedly by his elder half-brother, Kaiga - the only character in the series who is possibly even more sadistic and ambitious than his own father.
